The function of the Outpatient Department is to assess and treat clients referred to different departments according to the nature of disease. All patients referred here have complex medical, cardio-logical neuromuscular, musculoskeletal or neurological problems.
Nurses work within the accountability framework developed for Omar Hospital & Cardiac Centre which is based on values of Dignity, Collaboration, Communication and Patient Participation. Outpatient nurses and Service Nurse Clinicians work in collaboration with the doctors and multidisciplinary team members to provide clinical assessments, nursing care, treatments, teaching, counseling and referrals as appropriate.
The role played by the nurse is pivotal as he/she is the professional who becomes the patient’s contact person on the team. Some responsibilities include initiating and or coordinating referrals within the hospital. Many issues or client concerns are addressed by provision of nursing care/treatment, teaching and counseling and/ or telephone advice to the patients.
